Big Kahuna

Happy Tuesday! Did you have yesterday off? If so, did you do anything fun? If not then I’m jealous since you got your Monday out of the way. Have a wonderful day πŸ™‚

I planned on waking up early to run. When my alarm went off, I checked the weather and saw it felt like 4 degrees out. I wasn’t about to get out of a warm and comfortable bed to run in that so I put my phone down and went back to sleep. Waking up about an hour later felt so much better. For breakfast, we headed out to get breakfast sandwiches for a treat. A bacon, egg, and white American cheese with salt, pepper, and hot sauce on a toasted bagel is my go to sandwich. It was amazing and a great way to start the day off.

When we got home, I had to finishΒ “An Accidental Life”Β by Pamela Binnings Ewen. It was so good!! If I could, I would send my copy out to anyone who wants to read it. The story is based on true Congressional testimony in which nurses stated that live births occurred during late term abortions following the Roe v. Wade ruling by the Supreme Court. Doctors would allow the babies to die without getting proper medical attention. Horrible I know, but the story is amazing.

After I finished the book, I decided to go through the clothes in my closet. One of my goals for the year is to really go through the apartment to throw out or donate items we don’t need and then organize what’s left. Since it’s hard to decide if I’ll wear certain tank tops or short sleeve shirts, I decided to try the hanger trick. The premise of this is you put all the hangers a certain way to start. As you wear an item, you flip it the other way. At the end of the year, you donate the clothes you haven’t worn.

By the time that was all done, I was ready for lunch. I made another ham sandwich plus carrots and hummus. I also had a small handful of chips when I finished just to get a little crunch. It really hit the spot. If you like hummus, you need to check out the supremely spicy flavor from Sabra. It’s the best spicy hummus that I have found to date.

While I let my lunch digest, I started my next book. As I was walking around the library on Sunday, I stumbled upon Andrew Winer’s novel calledΒ “The Marriage Artist”. Daniel, an art critic, life is changed when his wife is found dead next to an artist that he raved about. Daniel tries to figure out why his wife killed herself and uncovers a connection to a lost artist in pre-World War II Vienna. I’m interested to see how the stories connect as it develops.

After a bit, I changed and headed out for my run. 3 x 1 mile repeats was on the agenda with splits of 8:15, 8:05 and 8:05. It felt good to get out in the fresh air. Plus I actually really enjoy tough workouts like that one. Anyone else feel that way? When I got home, I grabbed water, foam roller and frozen golf ball to work my muscles out.

Alex and I decided to have a fire going the whole day since we didn’t plan on leaving. We lit it shortly after breakfast and it was so nice to enjoy it the whole day. Plus it made the apartment so warm and toasty which who doesn’t love that? We had a giant piece of wood that we decided to burn. I ended up referring to it as the Big Kahuna all day. Any guesses on how long it took it to burn? 2 hour and 47 minutes! That one piece kept the fire going forever.

For dinner, I made one of my all time favorite meals. It’s called No Peak Chicken and the recipe if from my Grandma Feeney. Seriously it’s the meal I would always request when I would be home from college on break. The best part is since it makes so much we now have leftovers for later in the week.

After dinner, it was time to wind down from the long weekend and relax. We decide to flip on “Black Mirror”. Have you seen this show? Some episodes are really intense! It’s set in the not too distant future and is about how technology could influence our lives. It really makes you think. Neither Alex or myself love finishing the night with such a heavy show so we turned on an episode of “The Office” before heading to bed.

Question of the day: What was your workout yesterday?Β

    1. It’s just rice, cream of whatever you like soup, water, chicken breasts and onion soup mix. It’s hard to explain but it’s the easiest meal ever to make!
Hot sauce is my go to condiment, I love it so much.

  1. Love the hanger trick! I feel like I’m always getting rid of clothes I don’t wear. My husband on the other hand…is another story!
Yesterday was a rest day for me, but an active rest day! 2 long walks πŸ™‚

    1. I’ve never used the hanger trick so I’m excited to see how it goes! Alex will wear his clothes until they start to fray an only then get rid of them, drives me nuts! That’s great, I can’t wait to have a dog to take on walks for some relaxing rest days.

  2. Hi Maureen:) I had to work yesterday so I didn’t do anything special. My husband on the other hand, had the day off and of course I got so jealous.

Mondays are normally my days off, but ran 3 treadmill miles this morning.

All of your food looks very delicious and it’s making me very hungry right now. Hope you enjoy the rest of your day Maureen!

    1. Hi Nathaly! I would be jealous too if I was working and my boyfriend was off. I totally get how you felt.
I have 3 miles to run today as well! I find it’s a great distance to get moving but can be fit in anywhere during the day.
It’s almost lunch so I’m getting hungry as well. Hope you have something delicious for lunch πŸ™‚

  3. You suckered me in with that amazing looking breakfast sandwich then switched to things like books and women’s clothing. I was worried, but you totally redeemed yourself closing it out with the Office. πŸ™‚

  4. sounds like you had a good and tasty day. I haven’t worked out since Sunday, unless you consider shoveling a workout. I have bagels, I should make a breakfast sandwich tomorrow… or maybe just bacon and cheese… hmmm now I’m thinking

      1. Yum! I am a creature of ha.bit and eat much healthier if I just eat the same thing everyday. I am thinking of trying your egg and toast for breakfast

      2. Same! I seriously have eaten the same thing for lunch since I started working at my first internship 3 years ago. It works so why change it. Eggs and toast are delicious in my opinion! Plus so easy before work.

  5. Bagels and bagel sandwiches are honestly so, so good! I could eat them all the time, lol. We only have one bagel shop here in town and it’s sad because they only take cash (we never have cash) and always has a very slightly unhygienic atmosphere; a little off-putting.
Also, I love decluttering! It’s such a freeing feeling to clear out all the stuff you aren’t using and finally get rid of junk. πŸ™‚ Joshua & I actually decluttered our whole apartment on New Year’s Eve to go into the New Year with a cleaned out home, lol.

    1. That’s so annoying! There’s a sandwich shop we like in Princeton that is cash only. Luckily they have an ATM inside and neither mine nor Alex’s bank charges a fee to use it. It’s crazy how even in 2018 places still don’t accept credit cards.
That is such a good idea! I could never go through everything in an entire day. I would get so burnt out. I figure little by little is best for me. Although I am jealous you are starting out on a fresh slate lol.

      1. It really is crazy because you’d think everyone would be used to using credit cards as the normal exchange nowadays. Our bagel shop has an ATM but our bank charges for it so that makes it even more difficult.
It was definitely a lot to go through and we were exhausted, but it was a good exhaustion, lol. Little by little also works super well, though, because then you can focus more on what you are working on!

  6. The book you read sounds SO fascinating!! Also, I need to go through the clothes in my closet. Like today, haha! I feel like everything is just so messy, so I want to get that done! Thanks for the inspiration πŸ™‚
