6-5-4-3-2-1 Interval Workout

Happy Tuesday! How is your week so far? I was feeling pretty sluggish yesterday morning after cake and staying up late Sunday night to watch the last of the team figure skating competition. The good news was that I had a speed workout for my run yesterday to kick my butt into gear for the week. It was a really good one that I’ve done a few times and wanted to share!

Right now I am training for a half marathon that’s on April 15th. It was actually supposed to be on the 8th but got push back from some reason. At least it lengthens training by a week instead of shortening it though! One workout that I’ve been doing with training is drop down intervals. I start at 6 minutes with a tempo pace (comfortably hard – find your pace here) then decrease the length of the interval while running 10 seconds faster each time. It doesn’t sound like a lot but the final minute is an all out sprint which is killer!!

6-5-4-3-2-1 Interval Workout

If you don’t run, I think this could easily transition to the bike or elliptical as well. It’s only 21 minutes of hard running but it takes a lot out of you. I always end it exhausted and feel like I really worked my legs while increasing my cardio level. This is definitely a workout you will want to stretch really well after so your muscles can properly cool down.

Question of the day: Do you like adding intervals in your training?

Happy Thursday! I’m checking in with some excitement for the weekend that’s almost here. It’s getting closer guys, we can make it. Yesterday was gross and raining here so I’m hoping for some sunshine today. Partially because the sun is just better and partially because I don’t want to run in rain πŸ˜‰ Have a great day!

Wednesday just started off on a gross note. I looked outside after waking up and didn’t see any snow on the ground. Silly me thought that meant it wasn’t going to snow… After breakfast, I walked to my car to see a weird snow/hail/sleet/slush concoction falling from the sky. Not how you want to start your day am I right? It unfortunately rained on and off all day but what can you do. I still don’t know if I would rather snow or rain all day.

I typically have a rest day mid week but since it was gross I wanted to get some endorphins flowing. Also one of my goals for this year is to add strength training so it was a win-win situation. I ended up doing three different workout videos from Popsugar Fitness. The arms video was so hard!! When I went to turn my shower on to rinse off, my muscle was shaking…and that was the first video I did! I also did this barre leg workout and a super quick ab workout to round everything off. It took max 25 minutes and it got me sweating.

After a quick rinse off, I got to open my package that had just arrived. Does anyone else love getting packages in the mail? It’s like a present that you know is coming that you bought yourself. With half marathon training, I needed more gels for long run fuel. It was cheaper to buy a 24 pack and I know I’ll use them up so it made sense. Then I did some cleaning and organizing while listening to some podcasts.

For dinner I took out this massive tortilla that’s supposed to be for wraps and made a quesadilla. I put leftover refried beans in it with the cheese for some protein then topped it with salsa and half of an avocado. It was so filling! I honestly thought I would need something else to really fill me up but this did the job. I think adding the healthy fats from the avocado and protein from the beans did the trick.

Once everything was cleaned up, I got set on the couch to read my book. When Alex got home from work, we chatted and caught up on our days. I started to get tired around 9:30 and headed to bed. For whatever reason, I’ve been getting tired earlier and earlier recently. I’m going to chalk it up to long days at work last week and just being really busy in my personal life as well.

Question of the day: Would you prefer rain all day or snow all day?

Top Workout Songs: January 2018

Happy hump day! We’re halfway through the week which is kind of crazy to me. It seems like the past few days have flown by. Have a great dya πŸ™‚

Since I started listening to music on runs again, I realized I have a few favorite songs that really get me in the mood. Whether it’s for a speed workout, recovery run or long run, I know these songs will get me going and make me want to dance along while I run. Since I personally like seeing what music other people are listening to on workouts, I thought I would share a few of my favorites! I’ll preface this by saying it’s probably not “typical” workout music but it’s what I’ve been enjoying.

The Other Side by Zac Efron and Hugh Jackman

You guys I have not seen this movie yet but I desperately need to! The soundtrack is amazing if you haven’t listened to it yet then you have to. This song has such a fun beat and the back and forth between Zac Efron and Hugh Jackman is really fun to listen to on runs.

Unforgettable by Thomas Rhett

I’m just going to throw this out there but Thomas Rhett and his wife Lauren are the cutest celebrity couple. I love them so much. This song is so fun to listen to and I’ve definitely caught myself singing along under my breath while running .

Non-stop from Hamilton

Ah Hamilton…the show I have yet to see but really want to. I used to listen to the entire soundtrack on long runs to get lost in the story. Non-stop is one of my favorite from the soundtrack because it has a few different parts. Due to that, the beat changes a few times so it breaks up the song. I just find it fun to listen to!

Singles You Up by Jordan Davis

I am a huge country fan! It’s actually my music genre of choice if I’m being honest. This came on the radio a while back and I always found myself singing along to it. I listened to it on a run once and now I’m hooked. I love it and it gets me going on runs!

Shake It by Metro Station

This song is from when I was in 7th grade I think. It reminds me of when all my friends and I were at my parents hanging out in my room. I’m pretty sure we played it about 23865 times over the night. Even though it’s over 10 years old now, it still makes me want to dance along.

Question of the day: What’s one song you’ve been loving for workouts recently?

Date Night

Happy Sunday! I’m excited to hang out at home and go to the grocery store. I feel so adult saying I’m excited to go grocery shopping haha. Have a great day πŸ™‚

After getting a little bit of a slow start (which means I was dressed at 9 am not 7 am lol), I headed to Target with Alex to pick up a few things. We wanted to bring some granola bars and Dramamine with us on the boat. Alex had gotten seasick once when he was about 6 or 7 so his whole family was making me nervous he was going to be sick the entire time we were on the boat. I’m probably girlfriend of the year for planning a monthly date that involves a boat if he got sea sick right?!

When we got home it was time for my run! I really need to start figuring out ways to run earlier since it was hot out in the sun. I used to be able to run on an empty stomach but now it makes me feel awful. The run felt good and was my longest run to date with myΒ coach.Β It felt good and I’m excited to get back into longer runs again.

Once I was showered and ready for date night it was time for lunch. Since the fishing trip was in the middle of dinner time, I knew it would be smart to eat lunch later and slightly bigger than normal. So being the mature 23 and 22 year olds that Alex and I are, we made two boxes of Kraft mac and cheese. Yes I’m talking the blue box from childhood. I haven’t had it in a while (we like to keep a box on hand just in case) and it was good!

I read a little bit before we left. Since I finishedΒ Mrs. Grant and Madame Jule, I started a young adult book by Daniel Handler calledΒ Why We Broke Up. I didn’t realize it was a young adult novel until I was looking it up in the library’s catalogue to see if they had it. It’s definitely a different type of novel since there are pictures and short chapters (about 10 pages max) but it’s a quick read which I like for summer books.

Finally it was time to go on our date! We had to drive about an hour to get to the marina where the boat was but it was easy and there wasn’t traffic until we got close to the marina. It was such a fun outing and we both caught fish! I will be sure to share more about our experience tomorrow (we didn’t get home until late and were both tired) so check back again then!

We ended up getting takeout from a local spot close to home for dinner since everywhere near the shore was packed by the time we finished. I was falling asleep on the couch and I think I fell asleep within a minute of crawling into bed. I hope you all enjoyed your Saturday!

Question of the day: What do you eat in the mornings before a run (or any workout) and how long do you let it digest before working out?

13 Thoughts On A Run

Happy Thursday! On my run yesterday, I had some random thoughts that I thought I would share with you all today. Enjoy!

1. Man it’s hot, maybe I should’ve just run in my sports bra.

2. It smells like salt water…what did the put on the complex’s grass?

3. The people driving by must think I’m crazy to be running in 90Β° heat.

4. Are there enough leftovers for dinner tonight?

5. Do chips and salsa as a post run snack complete negate this run?

6. Running the park clockwise instead of counterclockwise #rebel

7. Aw this man is clapping as I run past him!

8. That mile was way to fast for the splits I’m supposed to hit. (Sorry Melissa)

9. Dear mom of these kids, can you please move their bikes from the middle of the path?

10. Look he’s clapping again!

11. If it wasn’t so hot and humid these splits wouldn’t be hard to hit.

12. I’m definitely laying out the ground after stretching for 20 minutes.

13. Just a few chips and salsa can’t hurt…
